French Wabi-Sabi Chest of Drawers in Stripped Pine

Tactile and grounded, this French chest of drawers from the 1940s embodies a rustic modernism steeped in simplicity. Carved from solid pine, the piece reveals the swirling grain and warm tonal shifts of the wood with sculptural clarity—its form quietly accentuated by a patina born of age and use.

Its façade features a confident rhythm of three drawers, each with hand-forged iron ring pulls mounted on shield-like backplates—an artisanal detail that gestures toward vernacular architecture and mountain utility. The drawer fronts are subtly chamfered, softening the mass and drawing light across the grain’s topography.

This piece likely emerged from a regional workshop steeped in rural traditions—perhaps the foothills of the Pyrenees or Alpine France—where cabinetry served both function and familial permanence. It shares a visual kinship with Perriand’s early Savoie commissions, though more modest in scale and direct in expression.

Finished using JADA’s light bleaching technique, the pine breathes with a renewed softness, its knots and rings emerging like brushstrokes across a pale, textural canvas. Minor splits, iron oxidation, and softened corners speak to its authenticity and quiet resilience.
